New Internet Network Provider To Start Construction In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Ting, one of two internet providers approved to provide citywide internet service, will begin fiber network construction in Alexandria.

Earlier in the spring, Alexandria City Council approved broadband franchises for two companies — Lumos and Ting. New broadband internet services will introduce competition in Alexandria, where Comcast is currently the only internet provider.

Ting is a Charlottesville, Virginia-based internet provider that launched in 2015 and now serves seven states and 14 markets in the U.S. In a news release, Ting indicated it will provide the first citywide fiber internet service in Alexandria. Construction on the fiber network is expected to begin in summer 2022.

“We are incredibly honored to begin serving the people of Alexandria and to introduce the community to reliable, future-proof fiber internet,” said Jill Szuchmacher, executive vice president of Ting Internet, in a statement. “Fiber internet brings significant economic opportunity and technological resilience to communities, benefiting local residents and businesses for decades to come.”

Ting anticipates it can connect around 90,000 addresses to internet service in Alexandria. As part of the broadband franchise awarded by the city, Ting will introduce a digital equity and inclusion program to provide fiber internet access to select affordable housing units at no cost to residents.

“Broadband is basic infrastructure for our community and we look forward to realizing the benefits of this new investment for our residents and businesses,” said Mayor Justin Wilson in a statement.

Ting has created a webpage to provide updates on its Alexandria fiber network project.
