Kalle Keranen, a senior at Westwood High School in Ishpeming, has been named the recipient
of Michigan Technological University’s full-tuition 2022 Impact Scholarship.
The competitive award is given out annually to prospective students pursuing majors
within the College of Business at Michigan Tech. Finalists from Michigan, Minnesota
and Wisconsin were invited to participate in leadership activities on campus and received
renewable awards ranging from $1,000 to full in-state tuition.
Keranen plans to study general business at Tech starting in fall 2022. Aside from
her studies, she aims to join the Pavlis Honors College, the Applied Portfolio Management
Program and the American Marketing Association on campus.
“Being an Impact Scholar will allow me to focus on academics without the stress of
paying for tuition. It will also help me get more involved, and motivate me to work
hard and earn good grades,” she said.
The five-sport varsity athlete is also eager to stay active through golf and snowboarding, and try broomball, Tech’s beloved wintertime sport.
The daughter of Kate and Jason Keranen, Kalle is a third-generation Husky. Her interest
in Michigan Tech began as a child, but really evolved during a campus summer tour. “I was initially thinking about engineering, but after self-reflection and meeting
business professors who were so welcoming and passionate, I knew I wanted to pursue
business at Michigan Tech,” she said.
Keranen can already envision her goals after college. “My dream career is to be a
marketing executive in the sports industry. I would love to be in charge of social
media or digital marketing for an NHL team,” she said.
Next year’s Michigan Tech Impact Scholarship application will open this summer.
